I’m In Internal Turmoil Over ASUU Strike – Education Minister

FG Urges Nigerian Students To Apply For UK Scholarship Amid ASUU Strike

Education Minister says he is in internal turmoil over ASUU Strike.

Newsone Naija reports that the minister of education, Adamu Adamu, has said he had been in a dark period of personal anguish and internal turmoil following the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

This online news platform understands that the Education Minister made known during the meeting with vice-chancellors and pro-chancellors of federal universities at the National Universities Commission in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital on Tuesday, September 6, 2022.

His words: “For me, the past two weeks have been a very dark period of personal anguish and internal turmoil. I used to deceive myself that in a climate of frankness, and with mutual goodwill, it will fall to my lot to bring an end to the incessant strikes in the education sector.

“This has not proved possible, or, at least, not as easy, quickly, and straightforward, as I used to think.

“Distinguished Chairmen, vice-chancellors, I called you today not to share with you my anguish but to share with you the details of what we have done and what remains to be done. And certainly, a lot remains to be done. But for very different reasons, the current positions of Government and ASUU on the future of negotiations seem to have coincided.

“For me, this is a position I would have wanted us to reach after an amicable resolution of all the issues contained in the 2009 Agreements. It appears that we are running ahead of the negotiations but not for the right reasons. The President of ASUU has been reported to have said the Union would no longer negotiate with the current Federal Government.

“This position must be resisted. Government and ASU have no option than to continue talking until our universities have reopened their doors to students, who clearly are the principal victims of the seemingly unending strikes. In the circumstances, therefore, all Councils and Senates of our universities are enjoined to rise up to their responsibilities.

“We must, together, continue to work to restore our public universities to where they were in the 60s and 70s. As the most important officers in our university system, Pro-Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors, must demonstrate more commitment to ending the ongoing strike.

“As Chairmen of Councils and Senates – the highest policy and academic bodies in the system – you must consider it your paramount duty to promote policies and actions that will discourage industrial disputes in our campuses. Government will continue to support the physical and academic development of its universities.

“Government will continue to reasonably enhance the working conditions of all university staff, academic and non-teaching.

“The main challenge, as you are fully aware, is dwindling resources available to address all the concerns of the citizenry. We thank you for your support, understanding, and sacrifices,” he said.

Meanwhile, Newsone reports that ASUU had embarked on a strike on Monday, February 14, 2022, following what the union tagged as failure of the government to meet lingering demands.

BREAKING: Wike's Group Gives Only Condition To Support Atiku’s 2023 Presidency

Wike’s group has given only condition to support Atiku’s 2023 Presidency.

Newsone reports that the team of the Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike, in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP ), Nigeria’s main opposition party, has pulled out of the campaign Council of the party’s presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar.

Rising from their stormy meeting at the country home of Wike in Obio-Akpor on Wednesday morning, members of the team vowed not to partake in Atiku’s campaign activities pending the resignation of the party’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu.

Only condition to support Atiku by Wike’s group

The members of the party sympathetic to Governor Wike insisted that there would be no deal with Atiku until Ayu vacated his office to allow an acting Chairman from the South lead the campaign of Atiku.

Newsone Naija reports that the aggrieved party stalwarts comprising founding members of the party, Governors, former Ministers and other leaders of the party made their position known in a resolution read by a former Deputy National Chairman of the party, Chief Olabode George.

The aggrieved party stalwarts maintained that their position was not negotiable as the chairmanship of Ayu undermined the unity and constitution of the party.

Reading the resolution, George said: “Senator Iyorchia Ayu must resign as the National Chairman of the party for an acting Chairman of the Southern Nigerian extraction to emerge and lead the party on the national campaign.

“Consequently, we resolve not to participate in the campaign council in whatever capacity until the resignation of Dr. Iyorchia Ayu”.

Jang said: “For a National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu to go and embrace Sokoto Governor, Aminu Tanbuwal, calling him the hero of the convention meant that there was a private arrangement that was done with Tambuwal to shortchange other contestants including Governor Wike.

“Here was a referee, who helped one of his sides to score a goal and then blew the whistle. This is not what we formed the PDP to do for Nigerians. Therefore, we unequivocally ask that Ayu must step down”.

They said their support for Wike was neither because he lost the presidential primary nor because he was not chosen as the Vice-presidential running mate but because of equity and justice in the party.

Prof. Jerry Gana, a former Minister of Information, said if the party intended to restructure Nigeria it should have the courage to restructure itself.

“You cannot build on a faulty foundation. This call for the chairman to step down or resign is not because any of us is aggrieved but because we believe it is important to ensure a a just, fair, principled and constitutional structure for the party. If we want to restructure Nigeria, we should have the courage to restructure our party”.

On his part, Seyi Makinde,  the governor of Oyo State, said: “We hope that the powers that be listen to the voice of reason and do the needful”.
