ASUU Strike: ASUU Gives Fresh Update On Resumption

Latest ASUU Strike Update Today, 20th September 2022

ASUU has given a fresh update on resumption amid the ongoing ASUU Strike.

Newsone Naija reports that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has faulted the claims by the Federal Government led by President Muhammadu Buhari that it had met the demands of the union.

This online news platform understands that Prof. Akinwole Ayoola, ASUU Chairman, University of Ibadan, said on Monday that the Federal Government’s claims were lies.

ASUU stressed that all its chapters that started the over six-month-old strike were still part of the ongoing action and were resolute to get what public universities needed from the government to survive and compete globally.

He said, “Nigerians should disregard the lies of the Federal Government. The Federal Government is far from meeting any of the union’s seven demands.

“The union gave 14-month strike notice to Federal Government before commencing the strike in 2022. Even the effort of the Nigerian Inter-Religious council in 2021 yielded no results before the union was forced to declare the strike on February 14, 2022.

“We waited for 14 months from December 2020 to February 2022 before declaring this strike. I am saying 14 months’ notice, 14months of engagements and the Nigeria Inter-Religious council intervened in 2021 when we would have declared the strike. We gave them one month with no result. Heroes are gone before they are appreciated but our union will not die. We will not die. We are going to be alive to see this struggle through.”

“Some sectors (research institutes) of the nation have been on strike for 13 months and the government has been paying their salaries. Is it an offence to become lecturers in Nigerian universities? What led to the strike? It is non-responsiveness of government that led to the strike.”

Court rules on FG’s motion to end ASUU strike Wednesday

The National Industrial Court, NIC, sitting in Abuja, has slated Wednesday to rule on an application the Federal Government filed for an interlocutory order to compel the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to call off its ongoing strike action.

Justice Polycarp Hamman adjourned the application for ruling after he entertained arguments from both counsels to FG, Mr James Igwe and that of ASUU, Mr Femi Falana, SAN.

FG’s lawyer, Igwe, had at the resumed proceedings in the matter on Monday, prayed the court to order the striking varsity lecturers to in the interim, return to the classroom, pending the determination of the suit.

He maintained that the matter was not only urgent but of great national interest as millions of students have been at home since February 14.

“Sections 47 of the Trade Dispute Act gives your lordship the power to direct that no worker should continue to embark on strike pending when the applications are heard and determined”, he argued.

Gridlock, tension as NANS grounds Lagos airport over ASUU strike

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, on Monday stormed Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos to mount pressure on the government to resolve the seven-month industrial strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

Recall that the students’ body had earlier threatened to ground activities at the local and international airports across the country beginning Monday due to the strike.

Chairman, NANS National Task Force on ‘End ASUU Strike Now,’ Ojo Raymond Olumide, said students were tired of pleading with both parties to end the strike.

“Nigerian students whose parents created the commonwealth cannot continue suffering at home alongside our lecturers while the few who gain from our sweat and blood have their kids abroad.

“We call on students to rise and join us as we take our destinies into our hands. Our demands remain consistently clear and simple,” he said.
